Friday February 10, 2012Gators Host Strong Field at SunTrust Gator Invitational
Coming off its second victory of the season at the Sea Best Invitational at THE PLAYERS Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass, the University of Florida men’s golf team will return home looking to win a ninth consecutive SunTrust Gator Invitational against an impressive field. The event, which features three top-10 teams, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, at Mark Bostick Golf Course on the UF campus.
“We’re really looking forward to hosting this year’s SunTrust Gator Invitational,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “It should be one of our best in quite a while in terms of quality of the field.”
The Gators will send out a lineup of juniors T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) and Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), freshman Eric Banks (Truro, Canada), redshirt senior Zach Lee (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) on their par-70, 6,701 yard track. Additionally, Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) and Thomas Stewart (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) will compete at the event as individuals.
The 2012 edition the SunTrust Gator Invitational features a strong field with nine of the 14 teams either ranked or receiving votes in the latest Golfworld/Nike Golf Division I coaches poll. Leading the way are a trio of teams that are ranked in the top-10 in Arkansas (3), Auburn (4) and North Florida (7). The two additional ranked teams are Florida State (20) and UCF (22), while Florida, Kennesaw State, Liberty, and UAB are receiving votes in the poll.
Since 1978, the University of Florida has invited some of the country’s finest collegiate golf teams to Gainesville to compete in the Gator Invitational. Through the years some of the best in golf have captured Gator Invitational medalist honors including PGA TOUR pros Brad Faxon (1983), Chris DiMarco (1990), Chris Couch (1994, ‘95), Oliver Wilson (2003) and Major Champions Paul Azinger (1981), David Toms (1989) and Graeme McDowell (2002).
Over the tournament’s 31-year history, the Gators have dominated the event, capturing 24 team titles and 11 medalist honors. SunTrust, a proud sponsor of all Gator athletic teams, will sponsor the SunTrust Gator Invitational for the 11th time in the spring of 2012.
Admission to the SunTrust Gator Invitational is free to the public. The event has also been designated a Rowdy Reptiles check-in event where students can scan their Gator 1 cards to earn 10 points.
