Thursday February 9, 2012Two Florida Volleyball Players to Participate In US National Team Tryouts

Gainesville, Fla.

Two Florida volleyball players will be among the record 208 athletes set to participate in open tryouts for the U.S. Women’s National Team and the U.S. Women’s National A2 Program. The tryouts take place Feb. 10-12, 2012, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Sophomore middle blocker Chloe Mann (Gainesville, Fla.) and sophomore setter Taylor Brauneis (Crystal Lake, Ill.), a recent transfer from the University of Louisville, will both participate in the tryout. Florida head coach Mary Wise also will be a member of the USA Volleyball support staff at the event.

Athletes in college with collegiate eligibility remaining for the 2012 season and not selected to the USA Women’s National Team may be invited to participate in the U.S. Women’s National Senior A2 Team. This program is scheduled to take place in Columbus, Ohio, from June 26 through July 5.

A projected 48 athletes will be invited to participate in the program, which will include training and competing at the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) from July 1-4.

“The format of the U.S. Women’s National A2 program will be different in 2012 than in past years,” USA Volleyball Senior Director Tom Pingel said. “The A2 teams will compete in their own four-team tournament held in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) held in Columbus this year.

“We feel this will allow eligible athletes from across the country to participate and increase the level of experience for the athletes and USA Volleyball,” Pingel continued.” In addition, this mini-tournament will provide youth participants, coaches and fans attending the GJNC an opportunity to watch higher level volleyball to enjoy in their down time.”

Among the 208 tryout participants representing 73 different colleges are 55 outside hitters, 49 middle blockers, 44 liberos, 37 setters and 23 opposites. The 2012 tryouts are open to current college-age athletes and older.

The 2011 U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts attracted a record 204 participants. Barring athletes dropping from the tryouts due to injury at the last moment, the 2012 tryout will be the largest ever.
