Saturday January 28, 2012Gators Open Spring Season at Sea Best Invitational at the PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass
The Florida men’s golf team will open its 2012 spring season on Monday, Jan. 30, with a trip to the PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra for the Sea Best Invitational.
The Gators will bring a lineup of juniors T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.), Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.), senior Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) to the par-72, 7,214-yard course.
“We’re fired up and ready to play in our first tournament of the spring,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “It’s exciting to open the season at an unbelievable course and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do out there.”
The 13-team field at the Sea Best Invitational consists of Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Florida, Florida Golf Coast, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, Liberty, Mercer, Old Dominion and UNF. Of the teams competing, UNF is ranked seventh in the Golfworld/Nike Golf coaches’ poll, while Florida and Liberty are receiving votes.
Last season, the Gators captured the JU Invitational at the PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass by an impressive 25 strokes over UNF. The Gators, who finished the tournament with a team score of six-under (858), were led by Bank Vongvanij who won took home medalist honors with a three-round total of 211 (-5). Additionally, the Orange and Blue saw three other golfers, Andres Echavarria, Phillip Choi and McCumber, record top-10 finishes at the event.
Tee times for Monday’s 36 holes will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Tee times for Tuesday’s 18 holes begin with an 8:40 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring for the tournament will be available through golfstat.com.
