Athens, Ga.

The University of Florida men’s and women’s diving team competed at the three-day Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout at Gabrielsen Natatorium to open up The New Year, which concluded Thursday night.

“We started out the first day and saw some strong performances from our divers. Our lone female senior,  Kaylee Doback (Brandon, Fla.) did really well for us, not just on Tuesday when we started, but throughout the whole meet,” remarked head diving coach Donnie Craine.

For the women, Doback finished fifth in both the 3-meter and platform championships with marks of 287.05 and 228.40, respectively. Additionally, Doback finished ninth in the 1-meter championships with a score of 247.95. Fellow teammate, sophomore Danielle Risley (Jacksonville, Fla.) took 11th off the platform (216.25), finished 17th on the 1-meter boards (216.85) and 23rd on the 3-meter boards (192.95).

Sophomore Mike Lewark (Davie, Fla.) led the way for the men after he finished ninth in the 1-meter championships after he posted a 297.95; 18th on the 3-meter boards with a score of 278.55; and 13th off the platform with a 296.10 mark. He was followed by redshirt sophomore Chris Jones (Palm City, Fla.) who also appeared in the 1-meter finals with a 15th place finish (265.65), took 21st in 3-meter competition (268.60) and was UF’s highest finisher off the platform with a ninth place score of 309.20.

Fellow divers, junior Sean Saley (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and senior David Springfels (Bradenton, Fla.) also contributed for the Gators at the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout.

Saley finished with scores of 252.25 and 259.65 on the 1- and 3-meter boards, respectively, and added a 24th place finish off the platform (176.35). Springfels finished 28th in 1-meter competition with a score of 220.45, and also added a 26th place finish in 3-meter competition with a 238.40 mark.

“Doback, Lewark and Jones really shone for us, making the finals in one or more events” explained Craine. “We struggled a little bit, but with each day we saw improvements and continued to get better.”

“Now, we see where we’re at and what we have to do to prepare and go into the SEC Championships.”
