Thursday December 15, 2011Volleyball's Kristy Jaeckel Named Capital One Academic All-America of the Year

Gainesville, Fla.

Senior outside hitter Kristy Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.) leads the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Jaeckel, an outside hitter who has a 4.0 grade point average (G.P.A.) as a graduate student in sport management, was chosen as the winner of the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division I Volleyball.

Honored as the co-winner of the 2011 Southeastern Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year award, Jaeckel led the Gators to a 27-6 record this season. She helped the 17th-ranked Gators finish second in the SEC and make their 21st consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Jaeckel and the Gators reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005.

A three-time All-SEC selection, she earned a spot on the first team for the second time this season. A 2011 AVCA Second Team All-America, she topped the SEC with 49 service aces, a 0.42 average.

A native of Littleton, Colo., Jaeckel led the Gators with 3.49 kills per set this season. She was also second on the team with 2.31 digs per set. Jaeckel finished her career fifth all-time in attacks (3,405), seventh in kills (1,331), ninth in points (1,588.0) and 10th in block solos (58). A three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Jaeckel was named AVCA National Player of the Week on Oct. 4 and led Florida to a 108-17 record during her career.

Jaeckel was the only member of the first team that was not a repeat selection. She is joined on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball first team by five student-athletes who were chosen to the third team last season.

The six members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Volleyball first team have a 3.98 average G.P.A.
