Friday December 2, 2011Florida Quotes from NCAA Volleyball First Round (Florida 3, Missouri 1)

Cedar Falls, Iowa

Florida Head Coach Mary Wise

Opening Statement

“When the draw came out, we thought this would be our hardest first round match in our tenure at Florida and it certainly lived up to that billing. Give credit to Missouri, the pace at which they play, how well-coached they are. They are very young. I think I can go back to the SEC and say we will all be better with Missouri coming into our league. With the opportunity to play that caliber of a team with that terrific setter…I think you can put Molly Kreklow with any team in the country and they will be highly competitive immediately as talented as she is. With Lisa Henning, she obviously had another great match. We worked really hard to try and defend her and yet, she still got 16 kills on us. At this point, we’ve seen the parity in women’s volleyball. For us to be able to beat Missouri and move on, it’s huge. Especially after dropping the first set, nobody panicked and Kelly and Kristy were outstanding in their play and helping us win that match.”

On set one

“We were catching up to the speed of which Missouri plays. We were just so high error in the first set. If we could just eliminate those errors, especially in that we never pressured them serving. We erred our way out of serving runs. In set two, Holly Pole really was a huge part of this match. Her serving run in set two turned the match around and she came up with 20 digs. She played three rotations and had 20 digs. Holly Pole was outstanding. But down 0-1, you really rely on your senior experience and that’s a double-double (Kristy Jaeckel) and a triple-double (Kelly Murphy), I think our seniors were just outstanding tonight.”

On both teams’ defense

“Well, we talked to the team and Missouri is used to playing in a league with some really good liberos, some great defensive players and we saw firsthand how great Iowa State is and they played them twice. So they’re used to keeping the ball in play. The ball doesn’t land easily. We were talking about being patient. We get a little impatient sometimes. We’re like homerun hitters a little too often. I thought it was a great first match in the tournament. We’ve played some first round matches that we didn’t have to work nearly as hard. We knew there was no way we could win this match without putting everything we have on the table and that’s what we were forced to do. Now, it’s going to be, can we regroup enough to play within 24 hours.”

On if the Gators benefitted by playing such a tough opponent in the opening round

“We would think yes, based on past experience. There’s such a gap, when we’ve been a seeded team, between the first round and the second round opponent, it would almost hurt us. Having said that though, you play your next opponent coming off a win. That’s what makes the second round match so difficult because everyone is coming off a win just in 24 hours. No one is limping into the second round.”

On what’s next for the Gators

“The players will watch the first part of this match, then we’ll send them back to do some recovery. The staff has already broken down film on both teams. We’ve got video we’ll start showing them tonight. The challenge is that for whatever reason, our practice is much earlier than normal in the morning which jams everything up. It’ll make for a later night but for student athletes, they’re used to that.”

#6, Kristy Jaeckel, OH, Sr.

On the difference between the first set and the following three

“I think that we got off to a bit of a slow start, just working on our nerves and getting used to the speed of their offense. They run a very fast set to all of their pins and maybe it took us a couple point before we were able to get a beat on them. Obviously, they came out playing hard and we fought back and we were able to get a little more stable and get a little more into a rhythm that we carried into the next three games.”

On both teams’ defense

“I think we just kept responding when they made good plays and winning the serving and passing battle. The team that controlled the ball more put pressure on the other team was the only that was usually ahead in the game or controlling the match. We tried to not let their great, wild plays get to us. We kept pushing every time they pushed us.”

#12, Kelly Murphy, RS/S, Sr.

On running the Gator offense

“One of our goals that we’ve been really working on has been finding our middles, in transition especially, and when they start getting kills, it opens things up for our outside hitters and it just makes everything easier on everyone. I think our defense played a lot better and we had a lot more quality digs and we were able to set the middles more.”

On both teams’ defense

“We had some really long rallies, but I give credit to our great defense and then our hitters for staying focused and not letting ourselves out of it and making errors. It was pretty tiring playing that match. There were some really long rallies.”
