Junior middle blocker Betsy Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) was named to the 2011 SEC Volleyball Community Service Team, announced on Tuesday by the league offices in Birmingham, Ala. This is Smith’s second consecutive year on the SEC Community Service Team.
Smith, who leads the Gators with .97 blocks/set and 92 total on the year, volunteers on the campus of the University of Florida and throughout the Gainesville community.
The Atlanta native volunteers with multiple organizations throughout the Gainesville area, including Baby Gators, Storybook Saturdays, Mebane Middle School, Shands Hospital, Shands Miracle Network, Buchholz High School Prime Time After School Program and Miracle on Main. She spearheaded Florida’s efforts in the SEC Together We CAN food drive and is currently assisting with Gator Tracks, a program developed to provide children throughout Gainesville with new shoes.
Smith is also the president of Florida’s SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) and previously served as SAAC treasurer (2010-11). She is Florida’s representative on the SEC’s conference-wide Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Smith, who boasts a 3.86 GPA with a double major in business administration and political science and a minor in mass communications, has started 27 matches for the Gators and is second on the team in hitting efficiency (.393). She has registered a team-high seven errorless performances this season.
The Gators are in the midst of their 21st consecutive 20-win season and begin action in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Friday when they face future SEC opponent Missouri at 6 p.m. ET in Cedar Falls, Iowa on the campus of No. 6 seed Northern Iowa.
