Friday October 14, 2011Havana Solaun's Two Goals Gives No. 11 Gator Soccer 2-0 Win at Mississippi

OXFORD, Miss.

Havana Solaun turned in her first double-goal match as a Gator Friday at Mississippi.

A goal in each half by freshman Havana Solaun gave the No. 11 Florida soccer team (13-3, 6-1 SEC) a 2-0 win over Mississippi (5-9-1, 1-6 SEC) Friday evening in front of an Ole Miss Soccer Stadium crowd of 1,132. It was the first double-goal match for Solaun of her young Gator career.

The win Friday puts UF in the lead in the Southeastern Conference race, with four matches remaining. Three teams – Georgia, South Carolina and LSU – are tied for second with 5-2 league records. Florida faces South Carolina and LSU in the final two matches of the regular season.

The first goal started when Taylor Travis got the ball to Jo Dragotta just above the Rebel box. Freshman Havana Solaun took the crossing pass from Dragotta at the top of the 18-yard box, beat her defender 1 v 1 and scored off her shot from the penalty spot to the far post corner.

Solaun added her fifth goal of the season in the second half. The Gators won the ball off a Rebel turnover and it was sent ahead to Jazmyne Avant. She beat her defender on a drive to the end line and centered the ball to Solaun in the six-yard box. Solaun redirected the pass to the far post.

For Solaun, she was just following the Gator coaching staff’s instructions.

“The coaches were really emphasizing to get in the box because Jazmyne was making amazing runs all game and getting the ball in the box. We couldn’t seem to get on the end of them,” Solaun said. “Jaz made another great run and crossed it right to me. I just had to stand there and put it in.”

Solaun has been a productive point producer as of late, turning in at least a point in five of the last six matches. Ten of her 16 points this season have come in that span.

The Gators out-shot the Rebels 16-3 Friday, including seven shots on goal. UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh thought the team could have been a bit sharper in their shooting, but liked the way the Gators were able to keep UM’s shot number low.

“I think it was a little frustrating at times that we didn’t execute a little bit better but ultimately we limited their opportunities, which is something we went into the weekend having as a goal,” Burleigh said. “We got two goals and that was enough. I would have liked to be more efficient, but in terms of us keeping possession, we had the ball most of the game.”

The Gators got a second-half boost from a cheering contingent who also wears the orange and blue. The No. 12 Gator volleyball team, after sweeping the Rebels 3-0 Friday, came to cheer on Florida’s soccer squad.

“It was awesome to see the volleyball team cheering us on. I thought they were going to rush the field at the end of the game,” Burleigh said. “I don’t think there are a lot of schools out there that have that type of school spirit where everyone supports each other so much. When we have a chance to be in the same city as them, it is awesome.”

The Gators continue play in the Magnolia State on Sunday when they meet Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., at 2 p.m. ET. South Carolina gave MSU its first home loss of the season Friday by a 1-0 score. Live, streaming video of Sunday’s match is available on GatorVision. The match can also be heard on WRUF SportsRadio 850, by simulcast on Cox Channel 946 (Gainesville/Ocala) or on www.GatorZone.com with Adam Schick and Matthew Stubbington calling the action.
