Thursday October 6, 2011Gators Wrap Up Qualifying Play at ITA Men's All-American Championships

Tulsa, Okla.

The Florida men’s tennis team wrapped up Qualifying play on Wednesday at the 2011 ITA Men’s All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa. Sophomore Spencer Newman (Miami, Fla.) and junior Bob van Overbeek (Boca Raton, Fla.) each advanced to the third round of the Qualifiers.


Senior Nassim Slilam (Paris, France), the only Gator remaining in the tournament, will face Oklahoma’s Guillermo Alcorta in the first round of the Main Draw, which begins on Thursday.


Newman won his opening round match over Drake’s Anis Ghorbel, 6-4, 6-2, and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the second round over David Holiner from the University of Texas. Newman dropped his third round matchup in three sets against Nebraska’a Benedikt Lindheim, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.


Van Overbeek opened play with a three-set win, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, over Edward Jones from Tennessee and won in straight sets in round two, 6-3, 6-3, over Southern Cal’s Yannick Hanfmann. He was eliminated from the Qualifiers after losing to Roy Kalmanovich from Illinois, 7-6 (3), 6-2.


Junior Frank Carleton (Naples, Fla.) won his opening round match against Marquette’s Dan Mamalat, 6-2, 6-2, before falling in the second round, 6-7, 7-5, 6-0, to Marc Bruche from Iowa. Junior Billy Federhofer (North Miami, Fla.) also dropped his second round match, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Ole Miss’ Chris Thiemann. Fedehofer beat Johnny Grimal from Memphis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round.


Sophomore Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) lost in the first round to Pepperdine’s Mousheg Hovhannisyan, 7-5, 6-2. Butz rebounded with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Jadon Phillips from New Mexico in the Consolation Singles.


On the doubles side, the Gators had two doubles pairs advance to the final round of qualifying before being eliminated. Federhofer and Slilam were taken out by Tuomas Manner and Alexander Pelaez of Illinois State, 8-3. Butz and van Overbeek lost to David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira from Wichita State, 8-6.


Florida’s third doubles’ team of Carleton and Newman fell in the third round to Oklahoma’s Costin Paval and Dane Webb, 8-4.
