Tuesday September 27, 2011Matt Mizereck is SEC Men's Runner of Week, Genevieve LaCaze Named SEC Co-Women's Runner of Week
Following Florida’s stellar weekend at the 2011 Mountain Dew Invitational, Gator runners Matt Mizereck (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Genevieve LaCaze (Daisy Hill, Australia) have been named SEC Runners of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday. Mizereck, a sophomore on this season’s men’s squad, is this week’s SEC Men’s Runner of the Week, while veteran senior LaCaze shares this week’s SEC Women’s Runner of the Week honor with Stephanie Brown from Arkansas.
Florida has now picked up two conference accolades each week of its 2011 slate and has seen six different Gator runners earn SEC honors. After last weekend’s performances, LaCaze holds the fastest women’s 5K mark (17:05.09) in the Southeastern Conference so far this season, while Mizereck holds the second-fastest 8K (24:38.50) from an SEC male individual to this point in 2011.
Both Mizereck and LaCaze helped lead the Orange and Blue at Florida’s lone home event of the fall, turning in stellar races amid a competitive field last Saturday. LaCaze turned in a career-best 5K time of 17:05.09 to win the individual race, setting a Mountain Dew Invite record with the fastest run ever by a Gator at UF’s Mark Bostick Golf Course. LaCaze’s victory marked the second Mountain Dew Invite title of her career after also winning the event in 2008. Florida turned in the top three women’s individual finishes, battling for a first-place team score of 30 points to top then – No.15 North Carolina, which placed second with 35 points.
Mizereck clocked a second-place individual finish, helping Florida to second overall as a team at the MDI – just four points behind the men’s squad from Michigan (42-46) – while topping third-place finisher, No. 30 North Carolina (47). Mizereck’s mark of 24:38.50 in his first 8K of the season was just three seconds off the first-place finisher and six seconds shy of his career-best collegiate mark set at last year’s Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
Mizereck was the Gators’ first runner to cross the finish line, helping propel three teammates to top-10 finishes as Florida battled the difficult field that had 24 of the top 25 runners representing UF, UNC and Michigan in the men’s 158-athlete field.
LaCaze, Mizereck and both of UF’s distance squads will enter a three-week training period before heading back to the top-25 saturated Wisconsin adidas Invitational Oct. 14. Last year, both Florida teams finished seventh at the extremely competitive meet in Madison, Wis., where 2010-11 senior Charlotte Browning claimed the women’s individual title.
