Saturday September 24, 2011Gators Battle Through Round Two Of Mason Rudolph

Franklin, Tenn.

Mia Piccio

The Gator women’s golf team carded a second round 296 (+8) to give them a two-day total of 599 (+22) in the 2011 Mason Rudolph Fall Preview. The No.16 ranked Gators, according to the the Golf World/NGCA preseason women’s coaches’ poll, is currently in 11th place and is 20 strokes behind the leader.

The second round saw the Gators fight through a rough start to remain in the mix amongst the nation’s top programs.

“We dug ourselves in a big hole early in the day,” Head coach Jan Dowling admitted. “I’m very proud to see our team battle back and grind out a solid round today. Our score is not indicative of how hard the team had to work.”

Freshman Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) has emerged early in the season as the Gators top golfer. Hedberg is tied for 15th after two rounds. The Spaniard carded a one-over 73 to give her a two-day total of 149 (+2).

“Camilla had a chance to score better today but she really grinded out there today,” said Dowling.  “Camilla said she’s ready to go lower and compete with the best in the nation and I know she can.”

Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) got off to a slow start and but finished strong making birdies in two of the final four holes. Jensen shot a three-over 75 to give her a 36-hole total of 153 (+9).

“Evan really had to grind out there, as well,” Dowling explained “Evan played really well today and, like the rest of our team, could have easily scored better.”

Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) shot a two-over 74, Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn) also recorded a two-over 74 and Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) finished the second round with five-over 77 to complete the Gators second round scores.

“The course played  a little easier, and the weather was better than yesterday.” Dowling said about the second round. “The better conditions the made course play a little shorter so there were some better scores out there today.”

UCLA, who shot an impressive 283 (-5) in the second round, takes the lead into the final round. Alabama, who is six shots off the lead, holds second place entering the last day of the tournament.

The third and final round of the Mason Rudolph will get under way tomorrow, September 25, at 8:30 a.m. ET with fixed tee times on holes number one and 10.
