Franklin, Tenn.

Isabelle Lendl and Jan Dowling

University of Florida women’s golf team finished the first round of the 2011 Mason Rudolph Fall Preview with a team score of 303 (+15). UF, who is currently ranked No.16 in the Golf World/NGCA preseason women’s coaches’ poll, is currently tied for 8th and is 11 shots back of Southern California who sits in first-place after day one.

‘It’s a tight leader board and we can move up,” Head coach Jan Dowling acknowledged. “We need to make our adjustments and just go play the way we can.”

Once again, the Gators were led by freshman Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain), who is tied for ninth with a score of 73 (+1). Hedberg, who got off to a rocky start going four-over through the first six holes, bounced back going three-under on the final 12 holes

“Camilla played great,” Dowling gleamed “She had an early stretch of three holes that were rough but she collected herself and finished strong. Anytime you can shoot close to even on this course, it’s an accomplishment.”

Junior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines), who is tied for 27th, played a solid round of golf recording a first round total of 75 (+3).

Junior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.), who finished with a five-over 77, senior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.), who carded a first round 78 (+6), and Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.), who finished the first day with a 10-over 82, rounded out the first round scores for the Gators.

“We could have done better with some simple fundamentals today,” Dowling said.  “We made the course harder than needed to be, but at the same time, it was a difficult course today. I believe we shot a respectable round as a team.”

Southern California escapes the first round with a one shot lead over Arizona State.

The second round will get under way tomorrow, September 24, at 9 a.m. ET with fixed tee times on holes number one and 10.
