Wednesday September 21, 2011Florida Student-Athletes Sponsor 2011 SEC Together We CAN Drive

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is encouraging Gator fans to help the Gainesville chapter of the Salvation Army as part of the Southeastern Conference’s Together We CAN drive that spans from September 16th–October 2nd. Led by student-athletes, the SEC Together We CAN Drive is designed to support food banks and shelters throughout the southeast. Since this marks the five-year anniversary of the SEC Together We CAN Drive, student-athletes are hoping to collect enough food and donations to eclipse the 500,000 total pounds collected mark.

Fans are encouraged to bring as many canned goods to the designated Gator games throughout the next two weeks. All canned or dried food items are acceptable and the Salvation Army’s most-needed food items include canned meats, rice and beans, noodles, peanut butter and jelly, as well as spaghetti sauce. Items must be sealed and in its original packaging to be accepted. SAAC representatives will be present at the designated athletic events to help with the collection process.

The No. 6 Florida volleyball team’s Sunday, September 25th match is the next target for the drive, as fans can bring donated items to the Gators’ nationally televised SEC showdown with rival Tennessee at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center at 5 p.m. The drop-off location will be at Gate 1 as fans enter the O’Connell Center.

Florida fans will be treated to two designated events on Friday, September 30th as the WCWS runners-up Florida softball squad will host an exhibition double-header against Sante Fe starting at 6 p.m. at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

Florida’s final designated food drive competition takes place on Sunday, October 2nd, as Gator fans can catch the No. 6 Florida soccer team face Kentucky at 2 p.m. at James G. Pressly Stadium.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from each of the 12 SEC institutions are taking part in the "Together We CAN" drive and the items that each school collects will go to a food bank in each University’s respective area. Each league institution will report the total amount of food and donations they collect and the SEC office will announce the league total.

The SEC Together We CAN drive is not a competition between the universities, but a chance for all the schools in the conference to work together to help people in need. Last year, the SEC Together We CAN drive collected 240,000 pounds of food conference-wide, over four times the previous year’s donation total.
