Tuesday September 20, 2011Kelly Murphy Named AVCA National Player of the Week

Gainesville, Fla.

Senior right-side/setter Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) was named the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I National Player of the Week for her outstanding performance against SEC foe Mississippi State, it was announced Tuesday by the Lexington, Ky., based organization.

Murphy, a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, earns the award for the third time in her career after also being named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week as a junior on Aug. 31, 2010 and as a freshman on Sept. 30, 2008. She is the first athlete in program history to win the award three times in her career.

The national recognition comes one day after Murphy was named the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. Murphy has been named the SEC’s Offensive Player of the Week seven times in her career, including four recognitions last season en route to being named the 2010 SEC Player of the Year and an AVCA First Team All-American.

Last year, Murphy became just the second player in school history to earn the award more than once in her career, as Aycan Gokberk garnered the same recognition twice during the 1995 campaign. In UF school history, seven Gators have earned 10 National Player of the Week honors from the AVCA.

Murphy registered her 25th career triple-double against the Bulldogs, turning in 10 kills, 19 assists and 11 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Mississippi State, her third triple-double of the season. Murphy hit .526 against the Bulldogs with no errors, marking the 11th time in her career in which she was errorless. The Wilmington, Ill. native aided the Gators to a .327 team hitting percentage for the week and surpassed her season average in five categories this week (points per set, assists per set, kills per set, hitting percentage, digs per set).

Murphy leads the SEC and is 24th nationally in service aces with .50/set and is seventh in hitting percentage with a .359 hitting clip. The Gators are first in the SEC in hitting percentage (.280) and opponent hitting percentage (.125), rank second in service aces with 1.72/set and are third in the SEC in blocks with 2.47/set.

Florida returns to action on Friday, September 23rd when the No. 7 Gators take on the Kentucky Wildcats at 7 p.m. The Orange and Blue will then prepare for their first nationally televised match as the Gators face the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday, September 25th at 5 p.m. on ESPNU. Sam Gore will serve as the play-by-play analyst while former Georgia outside hitter and three-time All-SEC performer Maria Taylor will provide color commentary.

Gator fans can also join longtime play-by-play announcer Tom Collett and former Gator All-SEC setter Missy Whittemore on 103.7 The Gator for the radio broadcast on Friday and Sportsradio 850 with Sunday’s broadcast.
