Friday September 16, 2011T.J. Vogel Leads No. 7 Gators Men's Golf in First Round of Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invita

Olympia Fields, Ill.

Junior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) fired a two-under par round of 68 to pace the No. 7 Florida men’s golf team in the opening round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. As a team, the Gators are tied for 10th overall after shooting a team score of 290 (+10).

“To be honest, I saw a lot of positive things from our guys out there today,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Obviously we aren’t excited about being tied for 10th place, but the field is pretty compacted and we just have to come out and put a few good rounds together tomorrow.”

Vogel currently sits in a tie for third place after his round of 68, two shots behind leader Andrew Yun of Stanford. Starting on number 10, Vogel tallied birdies on the par-5 15th and the par-4 17th before giving two back with a double at 18, to make the turn in an even 35 strokes. In his home half, Vogel made birdies on the par-4 third and the par-4 ninth to finish his day two strokes under par.

“T.J.’s play today was big for us,” Alexander explained. “One of our goals going into the season was to get T.J. back to being T.J. on the course and he certainly played like that today.”

Juniors Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) each carded rounds of 73 (+3) for the Gators. McCumber used a pair of birdies against five bogeys, while Mou made a pair of birdies which were countered by three bogeys and a double.

“Tyler didn’t have his best stuff today but I thought that he did a good job of battling out there and I think Tommy struck the ball well but just wasn’t able to score,” said Alexander.

Rounding out the Gators lineup were senior Michael Furci (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) who recorded rounds of 76 (+6) and 77 (+7) respectively.

“Michael and J.D. had rough days out there today but I have confidence that they’ll bounce back and play well for us tomorrow and Sunday,” Alexander said.

The Gators will return to the course tomorrow morning when they tee off at 8:00 a.m. CST. Live scoring for the second round will be available through www.golfstat.com.
