Tuesday August 30, 2011Coach Todd Morgan Meets With the Media as Gators Earn USTFCCCA Preseason Top 30 Rankings

Gainesville, Fla.

Gator assistant track and field and cross country coach Todd Morgan met with the media Monday to preview the 2011 slate, just a day before both Florida’s men’s and women’s cross country programs made an appearance in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2011 Preseason Division I Poll. Announced by the association Tuesday, the Gators were one of two team representatives from the SEC in the first poll of the season.

Florida’s women checked in at No. 22 in the preseason poll, while the men’s squad will start 2011 a preseason No. 26. Georgetown claimed the top spot in the women’s poll, while Oklahoma State was tabbed No. 1 on the men’s side. For the full top 30 poll visit the USTFCCCA website.

Last year, Florida’s SEC Champion women finished the season No. 29 in the final poll after a 29th-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championship meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

Both Gator squads were additionally picked to finish second in the South Region by the USTFCCCA Monday behind the teams from Florida State in the first regional poll of this season.

Florida is one of two SEC teams ranked among the USTFCCCA’s preseason cross country coaches poll, as the men’s team from Arkansas joined the Gators at No. 15 in the men’s rankings.

Just last week, UF’s defending SEC women’s cross country team was picked by vote of the league’s head coaches to claim its third straight SEC title in the 2011 SEC preseason coaches poll, while Florida’s men were selected to finish third.  The UF women earned six first-place votes to edge out the women’s team from Arkansas (5), while Florida’s men were a preseason number three pick behind Alabama and Arkansas.

Florida will depart for North Carolina Thursday morning, as the squad kicks off the season Friday in Cullowhee at the Western Carolina Invitational. The women’s two-mile race is slated for 6:30 p.m., while the men will start their 5K race at 6:55.
