Florida right-hander Karsten Whitson (Chipley, Fla.) was named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team chosen by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Wednesday. He becomes the eighth Freshman All-American in head coach Kevin OíSullivanís four-year tenure, joining teammates Josh Adams (2008), Preston Tucker (2009), Nolan Fontana (2010), Brian Johnson (2010), Austin Maddox (2010), Hudson Randall (2010) and Mike Zunino (2010).
Chosen to the SECís All-Freshman Team, Whitson has been a fixture in the Gatorsí weekend rotation and is 8-0 with a 2.42 earned run average. He leads the club with 77 strikeouts in 81.2 innings and has limited opponents to a .238 batting average. In his NCAA Tourney debut last Friday, Whitson did not permit any runs or walks as Florida overpowered Manhattan, 17-3.
The righty collected SEC Freshman of the Week honors on April 25 after a seven-strikeout performance in a career-high 6.2 innings versus Alabama and was 4-0 with a 2.56 ERA in conference games. In 10 SEC starts, the righty posted victories over Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss and Kentucky.
The No. 1 Gators (48-16) will host No. 16 Mississippi State (37-23) in the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional at McKethan Stadium starting at noon on Friday, live on ESPN2. The winner of the best-of-three series will earn a trip to Omaha, Neb., for the College World Series.
