Thursday May 26, 2011Lacroix and Bangoura Advance at NCAA Doubles Championship; Lacroix Falls in Singles
The 17th-ranked Florida men’s tennis doubles pair of senior Alexandre Lacroix (Paris, France) and sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory over California’s No. 23 Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt in the first round of the NCAA doubles championship at the Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus in Stanford, Calif., on Thursday.
The Gator duo broke serve at 5-5 in the second set, giving Lacroix a chance to serve out the match. The Gators took a 40-0 lead in the game, but Cal fought back to deuce. The Cal pair saved five match points in the back-and-forth game, but the Gators fought off the rally bid and closed out the Golden Bears for a straight-sets victory.
“We had a really good start today and served really well and returned well,” Bangoura said. “We got a feel for our opponents quickly. The wind got to us today and gave us some trouble on a couple of the match points, but we were able to close it out.”
Bangoura and Lacroix next face LSU’s eighth-ranked team of Sebastian Carlsson and Neal Skupski in the Round of 16 on Friday. The pairs met in the Florida-LSU dual match on March 4, with Bangoura and Lacroix claiming an 8-6 victory in their first career match together.
“They are a very solid team, good serves and solid at the net. We just have to come out and play how we did today,” said Bangoura.
Also on Thursday, Lacroix fell in singles second-round action, dropping a three-setter to North Carolina’s Jose Hernandez, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Lacroix finished 36-11 in singles during 2010-11 and wraps up his Gator career at 110-45, a singles win total that ties for fourth in program history (Greg Ouellette, 2005-08).
The doubles victory extends Lacroix’s UF career records with 102 doubles wins and 212 overall victories.
