Florida sophomores Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) and Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) won their respective second round matches at the NCAA Singles Championships on Thursday at Taube (pronounced TOE-bee) Family Tennis Center.

The Gator’s second-seeded doubles team of Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) and Will stretched their win streak to 13 and downed Virginia’s 32nd-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-3 in the opening round of the 32-team draw. Cercone and Will next take on Arkansas’ Claudine Paulson and Anouk Tigu on Friday.

Will, the number six seed in the 64-player event, defeated Ole Miss’ 34th-ranked Kristi Boxx, 6-4, 6-0, to advance to the round of 16 where she will play Stanford’s 18th-ranked Nicole Gibbs.

Will road an early break in the first set as she served out for the for the first frame, before zipping though the second and improve to 35-4 this year and 83-9 in her career.

"I thought I played really well today,” Will said. “It was a little windy and I had to move my feet a lot but I used my forehand a lot today and played really well. I’ve actually played [Boxx] twice this year and I knew that she had a really good game and that she was going to try to pressure me, so I tried to move the ball around as best I could, and I came out on top today."

Embree returned to the same court where she provided the heroics of the team championship 48 hours ago, this time earning a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory against UCLA’s 41st-ranked Noelle Hickey and set up a round of 16 match-up against Indiana’s 63rd-ranked Leslie Hureau.

Embree, who thought she played “ok today,” won the first set after jumping out to a 4-0 lead, before dropping the second. In the deciding third, Embree earned a break in the fourth game, but Hickey came right back with one. Embree, ranked No. 17 in the country, struck again and then held for a 5-2 and broke Hickey at love to win her 26th consecutive match and remain perfect on the singles court this season.

Junior Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.), ranked No. 42 in the country, lost her second-round match to No. 1-ranked Jana Juricova from California, 6-2, 6-2, and ends her season with a 30-9 in singles record this year and a career 71-23 ledger.
