Sophomore catcher Mike Zunino (Cape Coral, Fla.) will become a member of the 22-man roster for the 2011 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team it was announced on Tuesday. He will join Gator shortstop Nolan Fontana (Winter Garden, Fla.) and left-hander/designated hitter Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) on the squad.
Zunino is enjoying a tremendous campaign for fourth-ranked Florida (39-13/20-7 SEC) and paces the club in nine different offensive categories: batting average (.367), total bases (123), hits (69), runs scored (55), RBI (51), doubles (18), homers (12), slugging percentage (.654) and on-base percentage (.437). Defensively, he has thrown out nine runners attempting to steal and has registered a .998 fielding percentage with one error in 411 chances.
According to the latest SEC statistics for overall games, Zunino is first in both runs scored and RBI, second in slugging percentage, total bases and round-trippers and rates third in batting average and doubles. His .400 average in league action ranks third and he is among the top five in seven other categories: slugging percentage (.695, first), total bases (73, first), doubles (13, first), runs scored (30, second), RBI (27, second), homers (six, third), hits (42, fourth).
The 2011 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team will assemble on June 22. The team will embark on a tour which will be highlighted by the 38th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series. The series will open on July 3 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. Additional players will be selected to the team in the absence of players on the 22-man roster who are competing in Omaha at the NCAA College World Series. Players who have exhausted their age-specific eligibility to the 18U program from the 2010 18U National Team will also be in the candidate pool to replace players competing in the College World Series. July 2 will be the last day to report to the 2011 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
