Monday May 16, 2011Walton Addresses Media as Gators Prepare for 2011 NCAA Tournament Regional Play
Florida softball head coach Tim Walton addressed the media Monday to preview UF’s upcoming weekend as the Gators prepare to host the NCAA Softball Tournament Gainesville Regional after picking up the No. 4 seed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament late Sunday evening.
For the ninth consecutive year, Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium will play host to a NCAA Regional, including six years under Walton’s watch. Florida is one of 16 host sites and will welcome the squads from UCLA (33-17), Jacksonville (43-13) and Bethune-Cookman (33-24) in the three-day double-elimination regional, spanning from May 20-22.
Gator fans can follow all the action at 2011 NCAA Softball Gainesville Regional Central, including schedules, parking information, ticket information, recaps, results and participant information. The entire weekend’s games will be streamed live on ESPN3.com, while Adam Schick and Kristina Hilberth will be on the radio with the call for Florida’s games on 105 ‘The Game’ locally.
Play will open with the first round of the tournament May 20 at 3:30 p.m. as UCLA and Jacksonville take to the field first, while Florida and Bethune-Cookman will square off at 6 p.m. The Gators are 18-15 in NCAA Regional play, including 9-1 the past three seasons, advancing to an unprecedented three consecutive Women’s College World Series, including an appearance in the Championship Series in 2009. Under Walton’s tutelage, Florida is 13-3 in Regional play.
The Orange and Blue will welcome a tough match-up as defending National Champion UCLA will touch down in town for Regional play in what will potentially be the second match-up between the two squads this season. The Gators downed then- No. 2 UCLA, 4-1, as part of the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. Both squads have spent time at No. 1 in the polls this season. UF is 2-3 all-time against the Bruins and has never played the team in Gainesville. Florida also took an early season mid-week road trip to visit the Jacksonville Dolphins, coming away with a 7-0 victory Feb. 16 to extend its advantage in the all-time history of the series to 9-0. Florida last faced Bethune-Cookman in last year’s NCAA Regional May 21, 2010, earning a 6-0 victory, and will look to add to its 13-2 all-time record against the Wildcats.
The winner of the Gainesville Regional will play the winner of the University Park (Pa.) Regional, featuring the No. 13 seed Oregon (39-14), Albany (NY) (28-21), Fordham (41-17) and host institution Penn State (27-22). The highest remaining seed will host the Super Regional.
