Wednesday May 4, 2011Bangoura, Lacroix Selected for NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships
Florida men’s tennis senior Alexandre Lacroix (Paris, France) and sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) will both compete in the NCAA Individual Championships May 26-30 at Stanford University’s Taube Tennis Center, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.
Both Lacroix and Bangoura will participate in the 64-player singles draw. The two also form the nation’s17th-ranked doubles pair and will be among the 32 duos vying for the doubles crown. Only a participant list has been announced at this time, with the draw to be set at a later date.
Lacroix, a three-time first-team All-SEC player and the 2011 Southeastern Conference Tournament MVP, earned the sixth-overall seed in the singles field. It will mark Lacroix’s third time in the singles championships (also in 2009 and 2010) and his second in the doubles draw, having previously competed in NCAA doubles alongside Antoine Benneteau, who is now a student assistant coach for the Gators, in 2010.
This will mark the first appearance in the NCAA Individual Championships for Bangoura, a 2011 first-team All-SEC player who holds a No. 40 national singles ranking.
Lacroix is also listed as first alternate for the doubles field alongside junior Nassim Slilam (Paris, France), but that scenario would only come into play if Bangoura is unable to participate with Lacroix.
In total, the SEC placed 14 players in the singles draw, as well as having two of the top three alternates for the field. Seven of the 32 doubles pairs in the field come from the SEC.
The singles and doubles tournaments take place following the team championships, also hosted by Stanford. The Gators open NCAA Regional play on Friday, May 13, hosting South Carolina State at 1 p.m. The winner of that match will face Miami (Fla.) or Nebraska at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on Saturday, May 14, at 3 p.m. with a trip to the finals site on the line.
