Tuesday October 17, 2000UF Win Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate

TAMPA, FL

The No. 17 Florida menís golf team won its first tournament by eight strokes Tuesday to win the second annual Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate at Old Memorial G.C. (par-72, 7,028 yards). Sparked by senior Nick Gilliamís final round 67, Florida finished with an 858 (-6) to hold off Ole Miss which finished second with 866 (+2). LSU rallied from a seventh place day one finish to finish third at 867 (+3).

Ole Missí Troy Muller took tournament medalist honors with a 211 (-5).

"Itís a significant win in that itís our first of the year," Florida head coach Buddy Alexander said. "We made a lot of mistakes but we made a lot of good things happen. I was very pleased with the number of birdies that we made. In general we played well and we did a real good job of battling on the back nine. Overall, Iím very pleased."

After shooting a 67 in the first round and 78 in round two, Gilliam finished with a 67 to spark the Gators to victory. He finished with a 67-78-67ó212 (-4) and tied for second place overall. The second place finish was his highest career finish and his 212 tied his career low tournament score.

"Iím extremely pleased to have the team win- itís been a long time coming," said Gilliam, a Gainesville, Fla. native. "Obviously, Iím happy to have played so well today and hopefully we can continue this into our last tournament of the fall and make this two in a row."

Including Gilliam, Florida placed three golfers among the fieldís top-10. Freshman Camilo Villegas, who led the field following the first 36 holes after shooting a 4-under par 140, tied for fifth place at 69-71-73ó213 (-3) and junior Camilo Benedetti finished tied for eighth with a 76-70-70ó216 (E). Junior Ben Banks contributed a 68-78-75-221 (+5) to tie for 27th and sophomore Jordan Code finished in a tie for 53rd at 76-74-77ó227 (+11).

"Nick Gilliam was sensational today, especially on the back nine," Alexander said. "He played a beautiful 18th hole which was a difficult hole. This is big for him, his best finish. He had a pretty gutsy performance on the back nine holes. That ought to help him the next time he has a chance to win. We had a lot of guys play well. Camilo Benedetti played well. Camilo Villegas finished in the top five as a freshman which is a big deal and good experience for him and Ben Banks had a good first round with eight birdies. This is a nice win because itís our first of the year."

In its second year, the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate is held in honor of former Florida golfer Gary Koch, who was a member of the 1973 NCAA championship team. Koch, who was on hand at the tournament, captured 10 collegiate tournament titles and was a four-time All-American as a Gator letterwinner from 1971-74. No.20 North Florida won the tournament in 1999.
