Sunday October 8, 2000Men's Golf Finishes Fourth At Carpet Capital

Senior Nick Gilliam's tie for sixth marked his highest finish since the 1999 SEC Championship.

The No.17-ranked University of Florida men's golf team finished fourth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, which was played at The Farm (par 72, 6,906 yards) today. The Gators carded a three-day total of 292-288-303--883 (+19) to take fourth in a field of 15 teams. The field featured 10 teams ranked in the top 25 including the top-three teams in the nation. No. 6 Georgia Tech, which was the tournament's host, took medalist honors with its score of 6-over-par 870

The Gators had two golfers finish in the top-10. Senior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) shot a three-round total of 71-71-75--217 (+1) to finish in a tie for sixth. His sixth-place finish marked his best finish in over a year; his career-best came at the 1999 SEC Championship when he finished fifth. Freshman Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) made his first appearance in the top 10 in only his second collegiate tournament. Villegas finished in a tie for 10th place with a three-day total of 72-67-79--218 (+2).

Junior Ben Banks ( England, United Kingdom/King Edwards School) jumped from a tie for 59th yesterday to finish the tournament in a tie for 31st after carding rounds of 74-79-71--224 (+8). Junior Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia/Instituto Jorge Robledo) and sophomore Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla./Home Education Program) finished the tournament tied for 55th. Benedetti shot a three-round total of 75-72-84--231 (+15) and Code carded rounds of 75-78-78--231 (+15).

The Gators return to action next week when the team will be the co-host of the second annual Gary-Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate. The tournament, which will be played at the Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fla., will begin Monday, Oct. 16 with the first two rounds and conclude Oct. 17 with the third and final round.
