GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida men’s basketball team dropped its third game of the season, 71-68, in an overtime thriller against Jacksonville at the Stephen C. O’ Connell Center on Monday.
Seniors Alex Tyus (St. Louis, Mo.) and Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va.) recorded their first double-doubles of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds and 13 points and 10 rebounds, respectively. Junior Erving Walker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also contributed a team-high 21 points in the contest.
The Gators and the Dolphins traded baskets throughout the first half with neither team leading by more than four. Jacksonville hit a shot with 13 seconds left and pulled out to a 29-27 lead at the half.
The second half was much of the same until Florida went on a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 56-49, but Jacksonville stormed back and tied the score before the end of regulation at 61.
The Dolphins’ free-throw shooting and forced turnovers gave them the edge at the end of overtime to seal the victory.
Keith McDougald led Jacksonville with 18 points, while Delwan Graham and Ayron Hardy both added eight rebounds apiece.
Florida will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 22, as it takes on Radford at 7 p.m. at the O’ Connell Center. The game will be broadcast on Sun Sports.
