Thursday December 2, 2010Pre-NCAA Tournament Media Session Quotes

Gainesville, Fla.

No. 1 Florida takes on South Carolina State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Prior to Thursday’s practice in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, head coach Mary Wise and select players met with members of the media. A transcript of that media availability is below:

FLORIDA HEAD COACH MARY WISE (FULL VIDEO)

“Each year, when you bring a different team in, it’s a different tournament. The excitement about this year is that this is a group that still is peaking. Everyday in practice there’s something that the team is doing, whether it’s an individual player or a system that we’re improving on. Plus, this team has shown it will compete. None of the matches become easy, but if we can compete and play well, at least we know we have a chance.”

On facing South Carolina State …

“An athletic team not really big in size, but they get after it. Their conference Player of the Year is a big jumping player who will remind us of Arkansas’ great outside hitter, so there are some similarities that we’ve tried to equate for the players, and I hope that our size and our serving will give us an advantage.”

On junior right-side/setter Kelly Murphy …

“If Kelly were just setting or just hitting, either one of those, she would be an All-American just by doing those skills separately. But combining all that we ask of her, whether it’s at crunch time to get us a side out, or when she goes back to serve, we can make a run on her serving. So any of those, whether it’s setting or hitting alone would be enough. It’s the combination.”

On the improvement of Kelly Murphy …

“She’s really been the constant for our team, and where she might not have improved at the level of what some of the players around her have, we know every night what we’re going to get from Kelly, and that is an All-American level. So where some of our younger players have nights where there not as on, she’s been the constant. I thinks it’s a great confidence boost for all of us.”

#15 Chanel Brown, Fr., S

On playing in her first-ever NCAA Tournament …

“I’m so excited and I feel so blessed to be here to play in the tournament for my freshman year. We know we’re going to compete and we love to play together.”

On receiving SEC All-Freshman Team honors …

“It’s a huge honor and I wouldn’t be here without my teammates behind me and I’m just blessed with the ability to play volleyball and to have the amazing coaching staff we have.”

On playing in the O’Connell Center for one last weekend …

“It’s great to have Gator Nation here with us and fans here to support us at home.”

On South Carolina State:

“We’re just going to focus on serving, passing and blocking. We’ve watched video on them and I think we’re ready.”

#6 Kristy Jaeckel, Jr., OH

On playing host to the NCAA First Round …

“We’re really excited. We didn’t know if we would be able to (host the opening round), but we love playing at home. One last chance to play in front of our fans who come out and support us all the time is something that really means a lot to us.”

On being the tournament’s No. 1 seed …

“I think it’s a reflection of all the hard work we’ve put in throughout the season. I don’t think we’re really feeling the pressure, but we understand that it’s a great recognition. Obviously it’s not how you start the tournament, it’s how you finish, so we’re taking it one weekend at a time right now.”

On playing South Carolina State on Friday …

“We’ve watched some video of them, so we’ve been working on some of the stuff they do. They have a couple good outside hitters, so we’re just focusing on making ourselves better, especially with the serve, passing and blocking.”

On making the All-SEC team …

“The great thing is that so many of us were able to make it. Obviously the award we were really looking for was the SEC Championship, so that’s really a reflection of our team as a whole. We’re very proud to have so many people make it.”
