Tuesday September 19, 2000Men's Golf Finishes 8th At Tourney of Champions

Senior Nick Gilliam led the Gators with his 19th-place finish at the Tournament of Champions.

The University of Florida men's golf team finished in eighth place after the third and final round of the 13th annual Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. The Gators shot rounds of 289-292-294--875 at Holston Hills C.C. (par 72, 6,932 yards) to finish the tournament at 11-over-par. Louisiana State won the two-day tournament with its score of 13-under-par 851.

Senior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) led the way for the Gators, finishing in a tie for 19th place with scores of 72-72-73--217, one-over-par. Juniors Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia/Instituto Jorge Robledo) and Chris Zeller (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrews) tied for 32nd place. Benedetti fired rounds of 73-73-75--221 and Zeller shot rounds of 69-75-77--221; both finished at five-over-par. Sophomore Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla./Home Education Program) and freshman Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) finished in a tie for 39th place. Code carded rounds of 75-73-74--222 while Villegas had scores of 76-74-72--222 in his first collegiate tournament. They finished at six-over-par.

"The team is disappointed but not discouraged," said Head Coach Buddy Alexander. "We certainly need to play better, and I think we will. We found some things that we need to work on and we will do that and hopefully be better the next time out."

Alan Morgan of LSU took medallist honors with a two-day total of seven-under-par 209.

The Gators will return to action Oct. 6-8 when they travel to Dalton, Ga., to play in the Carpet Capital Collegiate. Last year Florida finished in a tie for second.
