On how
hard it was when everyone doubted the team, and what it was like to hold onto
your core values:
“It was miserable. However, the best
time of the day was (practice). The 22 other hours were miserable. The two
hours (on the field) weren’t miserable because we had guys that weren’t
resistant, that weren’t defiant and they were working. That’s where you got to
take your hat off to guys like Mike Pouncey, Johnny,
Trey Burton, (Chris) Rainey, (Jeff) Demps. Just seeing the energy out there and Deonte
(Thompson). There is no shortage of good dudes in this program. There
might be a shortage of some other things, but there is no shortage of that. The
22 hours of miserable days were only made possible by that
two hours of everybody on a mission to get a little better.”

On
lining up in the slot and moving to quarterback before the snap:
“It’s just trying to confuse the
defense. They game plan for Trey (Burton) being at quarterback and myself being
at quarterback. When they see Trey back there and myself out, they are going to
call defense for him, and when I come back in it just causes a little confusion
for them. That’s what we’re trying to do, just cause a little confusion for
them and not let them be able to make their checks.”
On the
utilization of Trey Burton helping open up the running game:
“That’s what we’ve realized. We do that
really well. We run the option really well. That’s what we have done really
well here for the past few years, and we wanted to get that back in the system.
If that means we put someone else back there to run it, then by all means let’s
do it. That’s what has been successful, and that’s what we’re going to keep
doing.”

On
talking to every player on the sidelines during the Georgia game:
“Just making sure everybody stayed
composed. There was a lot going on. We gave up some big plays in the second
half, so I just wanted to make sure everybody stayed composed. The young guys
we have, we needed them to stay composed to finish the game out. I didn’t want
anyone to get rattled, just make sure they had their head on straight.”

On what
the mood is like after that win:
“All smiles. We really appreciated
the win. We’re back to work. We have to practice tomorrow, but we are taking
this day off to enjoy our win at Florida, man. It’s been a long time since we
enjoyed one, and we are going to enjoy this one until tomorrow.”

On the
difference between the defense now and earlier in the season:
“Team chemistry. I feel that we are
more together now than we were at the beginning of the season. Looking from the
outside in, it seems like, ‘Oh yeah, you guys played better defense at the
beginning of the season.’ But it depends because you always change your scheme
up for different teams, and they do the same thing, as well. Sometimes we don’t
execute as well as we did the week before or the week that we are going up against.
It’s all about how we approach the game as a whole defense.”

On what
it means to him to be having success so early in his career:
“It means a lot. Like I told you before
I am really blessed and thankful for my family, my former coaches and my
coaches now. it means a lot to me.”
On the
hurry-up offense and what it does to the opponent’s defense:
“It’s awesome. It’s probably one of the
coolest things I’ve ever done on offense. We try to snap the ball as fast as we
can, and it wears the defense down, as you guys can see. The first quarter they
were done. They were about to tap out after a while, and we did a really good
job with the offense. The offensive line, I can’t say enough about them. They
are unbelievable, working really hard and it is really tough for them having to
get up and get down and hitting somebody every play. You have to give all the
credit to them.”
Junior RB Jeff Demps – WATCH

On being
limited while the team lost three games:
“It’s been tough. At times, I’ve gotten
frustrated. But at the same time, I have to stay positive and keep my teammates
going. At the same time, they’ve got to keep me going.”
On who
keeps the team up:
“Just all the leaders: Mike Pouncey, Justin Trattou, Lawrence
Marsh, I could just go down the line. Mainly, all the seniors
and leaders. They’re just staying positive and letting the team know
that you’ve got to stay focused and that you may lose some here and there, but
the best teams go through adversity, and they’ve handled it well. That’s what
we’re trying to do, and the leaders are doing a great job of doing that.”
