Tuesday September 21, 2010UF's Mark Parrish Named SEC Cross Country Male Freshman of the Week
University of Florida freshman cross country athlete Mark Parrish (Tampa, Fla.) was named the SEC Cross Country Male Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday. The first SEC honor of Parrish’s Florida career follows the Gators’ sixth-straight Mountain Dew Invitational team title Sept. 18 at Florida’s Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Seven UF men finished in the top 10, while the top five Gators tallied 41 points for the season-opening team victory. In his first race donning the Orange and Blue, Parrish crossed the finish line fourth overall (24:58.34) and was Florida’s third scorer in the 201-athlete Mountain Dew Invitational men’s collegiate field. Parrish was one of only two freshmen, for the Gators and overall, to finish in the top 10 and the only to run the 8K race under 25 minutes.
A Chamberlain High School product from Tampa, Fla., Parrish was twice named the Tampa Tribune, St. Pete Times Hillsborough County Cross Country Runner of the Year, while placing second and third in his FHSAA Class 4A State Cross Country Championship races in 2009 and 2008, respectively.
Both the UF men’s and women’s squads continue their cross country season Oct. 2 when they head north to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. For all the latest on UF cross country, visit www.GatorZone.com and follow the Gators on Twitter @GatorZoneXCntry.
