Saturday August 21, 2010Volleyball Concludes Successful Scrimmage and Fan Day
Junior outside hitter Kristy Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.) turned in a match-high 18 kills and senior middle blocker Lauren Bledsoe (Long Beach, Calif.) added six blocks to highlight a successful Orange and Blue Scrimmage and Fan Day by the Florida volleyball team on Saturday at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
The Gators split into an Orange squad and a Blue squad, but due to the nature of the match as a scrimmage, several players switched sides throughout the contest to prepare different combinations and match-ups. Florida played three sets to 25 points each and a final set to 15 points.
With all numbers and statistics being unofficial, the Blue team defeated the Orange team, 3-1 (29-27, 25-16, 25-20, 14-16).
“There is nothing we can do in practice to simulate a match-like atmosphere,” Florida head coach Mary Wise said. “That’s the great thing about the Orange and Blue Scrimmage – in terms of giving our players a feel of the gameday routine and playing in the O’Dome in front of our fans, that’s something that we can’t replicate. For our fans, it is a great opportunity to give them a glimpse of what they’re going to see from the 2010 Gators.”
Jaeckel earned the majority of her match-high 18 kills during her first three sets with the Blue team, during which time she notched 15 kills on .500 hitting with two service aces. Sophomore transfer Tangerine Wiggs (Seattle, Wash.) turned in 15 kills on .370 hitting with two blocks in her Gator debut from the right side.
Characteristically, junior right-side/setter Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) charted a triple-double, unofficially, with 11 kills on a .421 efficiency with a match-high 29 assists and 10 digs, to complement four blocks for 15.0 total points.
Bledsoe’s six rejections were part of a Gator blocking effort that combined for 16.0 total blocks between the two teams. She added nine kills on .500 hitting. Sophomore right-side Betsy Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) registered 11 kills on .444 hitting with three blocks.
“I think the reoccurring theme with this team is that we are going to be a work in progress,” Wise said. “With so many new systems, there are still things that we are learning and working on. In time, we really think that we are going to be a team that, defensively, will be very hard to score on. There is also a lot more offensively that we are going to add into the mix. We saw a lot of good things from a lot of different areas today.”
Prior to the team’s Orange and Blue Scrimmage, Gator players and coaches signed autographs of the official 2010 team poster for fans for more than 60 minutes at the O’Connell Center.
The Gators begin their 2010 campaign Aug. 28-29, when they travel to Omaha, Neb., to participate in the prestigious AVCA Showcase, where they will face Big 12 Conference foes Iowa State and Nebraska.
