Wednesday June 9, 2010Softball's Schutte Named to WCWS All-Tournament Team

Oklahoma City, Okla.

University of Florida freshman Brittany Schutte (Fountain Valley, Calif.) was named to the Women’s College World Series All-Tournament Team, the NCAA announced on Tuesday night as UCLA won the national title.

The utility player went 6-for-9 and belted three home runs in the Gators’ three games.  She launched two homers in the 5-0 win against Missouri and another in the season-ending loss to Georgia to bring her season total to 19, second in UF’s single-season record book.  Her .667 batting average ranked third among all competitors at the WCWS while she ranked up four RBIs.

“That wasn’t a freshman running around the bases out there – just a really good player,” Head coach Tim Walton said after the Florida win over Missouri.  “She’s a hard worker and has really developed herself into a ferocious hitter.  She can hit any pitch out of the ballpark at any given time and is really having a great tournament for us so far.”

She is the first freshman to done the list for Florida.  Former Gator Stacey Nelson, senior Francesca Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and junior Megan Bush (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) earned the honor in UF’s two previous trips to Oklahoma City.

Schutte was one of five players to hit at least three home runs in the WCWS as the eight teams set a new record with 35 total, shattering last year’s record of 24.  She broke five Florida freshman records and tied one as she shattered the rookie records for home runs, RBIs (59), slugging percentage (.780), on-base percentage (.457) and batting average (.346), while tying for most sacrifice flies with four.  Her RBIs ranked sixth on the single-season list as well.
