Thursday June 3, 2010Men's Golf Finishes Tied for 11th At NCAA Championship

Ooltewah, Tenn.

The University of Florida men’s golf team concluded the 2009-10 season after tying for 11th place after 54 holes at the NCAA Championships at The Honors Course on Thursday. The Gators, who carded a final round score of 293 (+5), finished the week with a total team score of 869 (+5). UF failed to advance to the match play portion of the event by placing outside of the top eight.

“The finish is very disappointing,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “The guys battled back at the end but it’s definitely disappointing not to advance to match play. I think we would’ve been extremely tough to beat in match play. Mostly I feel bad for the seniors. We worked hard and I thought we would get it done. To come this far and not advance is devastating.”

Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) and freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) carded identical final round scores of 73 (+1) on Thursday. The duo finished tied for 34th with a total score of even-par 216. Choi tallied four bogeys and three birdies on the day.

Seniors Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) and Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) both capped their impressive collegiate careers on Thursday. Alexander, who was tied for 40th after day two, dropped to a tie for 64th after carding his highest score of the week, a three-over 75. He finished with a final score of 220 (73-73-75, +4). McKenney fell to a tie for 72nd after carding a four-over 76. He scored a five-over 221 (72-73-76) in his final collegiate tournament.

Junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) climbed to a tie for 86th on the leaderboard after tying for 101ST after day two. Vongvanij had his best round of the day and the lowest among UF teammates, carding an even-par 72. He carded a total score of 222 (73-77-72, +6).

Oklahoma State, FSU, Georgia Tech, Washington, Oregon, Augusta State, Texas Tech and Stanford all advanced to the match play portion. Scott Langley of Illinois won the NCAA individual title with a 206 (70-68-68, -10).
