Friday May 21, 2010Second Round of NCAA Central Regional Suspended; M. Golf in Fourth

South Bend, Ind.

With all five Gator golfers between 13 and 16 holes through the second round, play at the NCAA Central Regional was suspended due to inclement weather. The weather failed to improve and play was halted for the day, with the Gators in fourth place with a total score of 506 (+5).

“We didn’t play particularly well today,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “We are a couple shots off the bubble so tomorrow will be a big day for us. I think we will step up and get a good round in.”

Florida will need to finish in the top five in order to advance to the NCAA Championships on June 2-5 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Top-seeded Stanford still holds custody of first place with a team score of 486 (-4). In-state foe Florida State is in second at one-under with a 542 and Northwestern is in third with a 545 (+2).

Freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) got 13 holes in on day two and is currently tied for 13th after finishing Thursday’s first round in a tie for eighth. After carding a one-under 69 in his first round, Choi currently boasts a score of 51 and is even-par with a 120.

After carding the highest UF round on day one with a four-over 74, redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) is tied for 28th place. He played 16 holes on Friday and has a total score of 134 (74-60, +3). Joining Echavarria in a tie for 28th is junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.), who led Florida heading into today’s round. Vongvanij currently boasts a score of 55 through 13 holes and with his two-under 68 from his first round, has a total score of 123 (+3).

Florida’s two seniors round out their lineup, as Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) are tied for 36th place. McKenney was tied for 29th after day one with a two-over 72 and carded a 59 through 15 holes. His score is currently 131 (+4). Alexander got through 14 holes on Saturday and currently has a total score of 127 (70-57, +4).

Iowa, Indiana and Michigan were the only teams that were able to finish the second round in its entirety. The Gators and the remaining teams who have yet to complete their second round will tee off at 8 a.m. ET and the third round will be played immediately following completion of the second.
