Saturday April 17, 2010Men's Golf Tied for Sixth After Round Two of SEC Championship

The University of Florida menís golf team dropped four places on the leaderboard after carding a team score of 292 (+12) on Saturday. The squad, which boasts a 36-hole score of 572 (280-292, +12), will enter Sundayís final round in a tie for sixth place.

 

ďThis team is hard to figure out,Ē said head coach Buddy Alexander. ďIím not sure if itís mental toughness or what exactly but we havenít found any consistency. We had a solid day yesterday but couldnít come up with the same today.Ē

 

For the second-straight day, the Gators were led by redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) who was one of two UF golfers to card a two-over 72 on Saturday. Echavarria boasts a 36-hole score of 141 (69-72, +1) and is currently tied for eighth. He entered the turn at one-over after making two bogeys and a birdie. Echavarria went on to card back-to-back bogeys on holes 11 and 12 before making two birdies and a bogey on three of his final four holes to finish at two-over.

 

Junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) also carded a two-over 72 on day two. Vongvanij opened his second round on a positive note, carding back-to-back birdies before making a double bogey on four. He finished his first nine holes positively with a birdie to enter the turn at one-under par. Vongvanij struggled somewhat in his back nine, sandwiching a double bogey on 12 with two bogeys on 11 and 13. He made a final birdie on hole 15 to finish his round at two-over and secure a 36-hole score of 142 (70-72, +2). He is currently tied for 15th.

 

Senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) and freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) carded identical second round scores of 75 (+5). Alexander is tied for 32nd with a total score of 145 (70-75, +5), while Choi is just one stroke away with a two-round score of 146 (71-75, +6) to tie for 38th.

 

Senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) rounded out Floridaís lineup after improving upon his first round score by two strokes with a 73 (+3) on Saturday. With a 36-hole score of 148 (75-73, +8), McKenney is tied for 46th.

 

After finishing day one in a tie for sixth, the University of Georgia propelled itself to the top of the leaderboard with a three-under 277 on Saturday for a total score of† 560 (283-277, E).
