Sunday April 11, 2010Gators Finish Third At Gator Women's Golf Invitational

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida women’s golf team finished in third place at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational. The squad matched its second round score and carded the second-lowest team score of the day with a 292 (+12) on Sunday for a tournament score of 879 (295-292-292, +39).

“First off, I’m very proud of the team, specifically Evan (Jensen), Jessica (Yadloczky) and Mia (Piccio) for playing solid on the last day under pressure,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “They really handled themselves well under pressure and I think that experience goes a long way. Obviously we really wanted to win and it hurts but Michigan State played really solid in their second and third rounds, as did Florida State.”

The Gator Women’s Golf Invitational served as the team’s final tournament before heading into the post-season at the SEC Championship.

“We don’t have a lot of time before the SEC Championship,” said Dowling. “I think it was great to be in contention because that experience is priceless. To have three players play really well under pressure will help us down the stretch. We are excited about the SEC tournament and looking forward to the challenge.”

The Gators were led by freshman Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) who was tied for second after day one. Piccio remained in contention for the individual crown throughout the entire day. She was one-under par after her first nine holes after making a birdie on three. She made a bogey on 12 and the tournament crown came down to her final three holes. The freshman made bogey, par and bogey to finish with a 72 (+2). Piccio finished in a tie for third with a total score of 214 (70-72-72, +4).

After being tied for 19th place, sophomore Evan Jensen (Bellaire, Fla.) rallied to earn a top-10 finish. Jensen owned sole custody of 10th place with a total score of 218 (76-72-70, +8). She saved her best for last as she carded an even-par 70 on Sunday. Also making a comeback was junior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.), who was tied for 27th after her first 36 holes. Yadloczky had the low UF round of the day with a 69 (-1) on Sunday. Yadloczky finished in a tie for 11th with a 219 (73-77-69, +9).

Freshman Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) rounded out Florida’s lineup, tying for 46th and 58th, respectively. Isabelle carded a total score of 232 (76-72-84, +22) and Marika finished with a 236 (79-76-81, +26).

Sophomore Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) finished first among individuals with a 222 (71-76-75, +12). Freshman Megan Pak (Bradenton, Fla.) finished in a tie for 40th with a 231 (74-80-77, +21). Seniors Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Fla.) and Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.) rounded out the individuals. Schachner carded a 232 and finished in a tie for 46th (78-78-76, +22), while Uzelatz finished in 72nd with a 245 (79-85-81, +35).

Michigan State claimed the team title with an 868 (294-286-288, +28). Chattanooga’s Emma de Groot defeated the Spartans’ Laura Kueny in a tie break to claim the individual title.

The Gators will return to action on April 16-18 as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the 2010 SEC Championship. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com or www.GatorZone.com.
