Friday March 19, 2010M. Golf Tees Off Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in 11th Place

Statesboro, Ga.

The University of Florida menís golf team is currently in 11th place after the first round of the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational. The squad shot a team score of 294 (+6) at the par-72 Forest Heights Country Club.

ďMy team is obviously in a little but of a funk, but I am sure we will play our way out of it,Ē said head coach Buddy Alexander. ďThere is a saying in golf that says when youíre playing poorly you donít ever think you will play well and when youíre playing well, you donít even think youíll play poorly. But I donít think either is true for this team. Thereís no reason to panic because the field is compressed together in terms of scores. We are just one good round away from being back in the tournament and I think weíll play our way out of it.Ē

The Gators are being led by junior Bank Vonganij (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), who are both currently in the top five. Vongvanij is tied for second, just one stroke out of the lead, after carding a 69 (-3) on Friday. He started strong, making birdies on his first two holes before going on to make 12-straight pars and birdie hole 15. He rebounded from a bogey on 17 to finish his round with a birdie on 18 and land at three-under par. Alexander shot a first-round score of 70 (-2) to finish the day tied for fourth place. He made birdies on holes five and 16.

Freshman Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) is tied for 62nd after carding a 76 (+4). After starting his round with six-straight pars, Mou made a birdie on seven and a bogey on nine to enter the turn at even par. He carded four bogeys on his back nine. Senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) began his round with bogeys on two of his first three holes. He tallied two more on holes nine and 10 before making three-straight on holes 15, 16 and 17 to finish with a seven-over 79. He is tied for 76th.
