Gainesville, Fla.

Freshman Ashley Bruns had 10 points on six goals and four assists.

Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.) scored six goals and notched four assists for a single-game school-record 10 points and Florida beat Marist 22-3 on Wednesday night at Donald R. Dizney Lacrosse Stadium.

Florida (4-3) outshot the Red Foxes 37-10 in the game. The Gators held Marist (2-3) to just three shots in the second half.

“Our defense played excellent tonight,” said head coach Amanda O’Leary. “We cut down on some of our mistakes and were able to put together two very good halves.”

After a scoreless opening five minutes to the game, Bruns jump-started the offense with a goal at the 24:10 mark of the first half. Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) scored for to give the Gators a two-goal advantage, then Bruns snuck a shot past Marist goalie Alyssa Littin for a 3-0 lead.

The run continued when Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.) connected with sophomore Caroline Cochran (Annapolis, Md.) on a cutting run towards the net. Julie Schindel (Edgewater, Md.) and Colby Rhea (Abingdon, Md.) each scored off assists from Bruns and the Gators had a 6-0 lead with 10:42 remaining in the opening half.

After Shannon Haas got the Red Foxes on the board, Florida had another scoring burst. Rhea scored twice and Cullen, Dashiell and Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each netted a goal to go up 11-1. Kelly Condon ended the run with a goal for Marist, but Bruns finished a shot at the buzzer for a 12-2 halftime lead.

The momentum continued for the Gators after the break, as they scored nine straight goals to open the second half. Bruns netted three goals during the run, while Schindel and Cochran each had two. Caroline Chesterman (South Nyack, N.Y.) also scored and Cori Gray (White Hall, Md.) notched her first goal of the season.

Morgan Dillon scored Marist’s final goal with 2:30 remaining. Hayward Sawer’s (Timonium, Md.) earned her first assist when senior Kaley Pendley (Longwood, Fla.) redirected a pass to score her first goal on the season.

Bruns’ total of 10 points matches the fourth-best in a single game nationally in 2010. Her six goals is a season-high for any Gator and four assists ties the mark Bruns set against Jacksonville and La Salle.

“Ashley played tremendous tonight,” said O’Leary. “She’s such a hard worker for us, and when she’s playing well it really ignites our offense.”

After struggling to clear the ball in their last outing at Johns Hopkins, Florida converted on 17-18 attempts Wednesday and only had 12 turnovers. They controlled 17 draws to Marist’s nine and had 12 ground balls to the Red Foxes’ eight.

The Gators continue their homestand with a game on Saturday against New Hampshire (4-2) at 1:00 p.m. at Dizney Stadium. Fans can follow along using GameTracker or watch online via GatorVision Online.
