Friday March 12, 2010Alexander, M. Golf Lead Field At Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

Las Vegas, Nev.

Led by senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), the sixth-ranked University of Florida men’s golf team is currently leading the 15-team field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The Gators carded a team score of 292 (+4) in Friday’s first round at the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club.

“I thought the team played solid,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Obviously, Tyson played great. I think it was his best round of the year so far. It was a complete 360 from the John Hayt Invitational where we shot ourselves out of the tournament early. Now the fun begins for us. I’m excited to see how we can hang in there against an awesome field on a great golf course. We need all five guys to be in the mix before this weekend is over.”

Alexander shot a 68 (-4) on Friday to tie TCU’s Johan de Beer for the lead. After making birdies on holes one, three and nine, he entered the turn at three-under before carding one final birdie on 13 to finish at four under.

Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) was two-over entering the turn after making birdies on four and eight and bogeys on two, five, six and nine. Echavarria responded by carding three birdies in his first four holes after the turn. He followed up with a bogey on 15 and 17. He is currently tied for 12th with a 73 (+1).

Senior Tim McKenney is tied for 25th after carding a three-over 75 on Friday. He made a birdie on three, triple bogey on six and a birdie on eight to enter the turn one-over par. Back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11 and a double bogey on 14 but him at five over with four holes to go. McKenney was able to finish strong, carding birdies on two of his final three holes.

Freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) carded a 76 (+4) in his first round to tie for 38th. He carded three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey in his first 18 holes. Fellow newcomer Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) is tied for 73rd with a first-round score of 82 (+10).

The Gators will tee off for the second round alongside second-place UCLA and Texas A&M, who is currently in third. The first group will tee off at 12:30 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available at www.GatorZone.com and www.golfstat.com.
