Tuesday March 2, 2010M. Golf Climbs to Seventh On Final Day of John Hayt Invitational

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The UF men’s golf team carded the second-lowest team score on Tuesday’s final round to jump four spots on the leaderboard and finish the John Hayt Invitational in seventh place. The Gators finished with a tournament score of 899 (310-293-296, +35).

“Obviously we played solid today so that was good to see,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Tim (McKenney) played great the last two days and that’s his second tournament in which he’s not done so well the first round but battled back to make a comeback. Also, congratulations to Tyler (McCumber), who finished in the top five as an individual. It’s a bittersweet day in the fact that we came within two shots of the top five, but couldn’t finish it out. The positive is that we bounced back but we have to get out of the box a little faster.”

Senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) started off his round on a high note, making a birdie and an eagle on his first two holes. He finished his first nine with a bogey to shoot two-under at the turn. McKenney made two more birdies on the final stretch and finished three-under for the day. He improved his score each round and tied for fifth with a tournament score of 217 (78-70-69, +1).

Finishing second on the day for the Gators was senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), who shot one-over par 73. He made three birdies on the day, but also finished with four bogeys. Alexander finished in a tie for 21st with a 225 (80-72-73, +9). Freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) had his highest round of the tournament on Tuesday with a six-over 78. He finished just two strokes behind Alexander with a final score of 227 (72-77-78, +11) to tie for 34th place.

Junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) matched his first round score of 80 (+8) on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 65th with a 234 (80-74-80). Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) finished in a tie for 79th with a 240 (+24). Echavarria shot his lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday with a four-over 76.

Freshman Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), competing as an individual, posted the best finish of his career after tying for fifth place. McCumber matched his second-round score of 71 (-1) on Tuesday for a total score of 217 (75-71-71, +1).

Tournament host North Florida claimed the John Hayt Invitational title with a team score of 876 (228-294-294, +12). UNF’s Joe Byun claimed the individual crown with a 212 (69-69-74, -4).

The Gators will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for their next tournament on March 12-14. Live scoring is available at www.GatorZone.com or www.golfstat.com.
