Tuesday March 2, 2010Jennifer George Named to SEC WBB All-Freshman Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.

The Southeastern Conference announced its 2010 women’s basketball postseason awards Tuesday, with the league’s 12 head coaches selecting Florida’s Jennifer George (Orlando, Fla.) to its SEC All-Freshman Team.

“There are so many great players who compete in the SEC and I really feel honored to have been included on the All-Freshman Team,” George said. “Coach (Amanda) Butler, Coach (Susie) Gardner, my teammates, everyone has really helped me this year improve every day.”

George was the SEC’s top freshman shot blocker in conference games (16 total, 1.0 per game) and ranked No. 2 among SEC freshmen rebounders in conference games (6.0 rpg). She also hit 50.0% from the field and contributed 6.4 points per game.

She was UF’s leader in SEC games for offensive rebounds and ranked second for steals and blocks. George swatted a career-high six blocks - the most by a Gator this season - against South Carolina (Jan. 24), one of which came with nine seconds remaining and prevented SC from making the go-ahead basket and another block came with three seconds left in the first half that allowed UF to enter halftime tied.

In UF’s last five games of the regular season, George was the Gators’ leading rebounder, with 7.0 per game, and second-leading scorer, with 9.0 points.

Some of the 2010 SEC awards’ highlighted by Kentucky’s Victoria Dunlap being named Player of the Year and Matthew Mitchell – a former Gator assistant coach - being named Coach of the Year.

Mississippi State’s Armelie Lumanu was named Defensive Player of the Year, Alyssia Brewer was named 6th Woman of the Year, while Kentucky’s A’dia Mathies was given Freshman of the Year honors. First-team and second-team All-SEC honorees, All-Freshman team, All-Defensive team, along with Player, Coach and Freshman, Defensive Player, 6th Woman and Scholar-Athlete of the Year were chosen by the league's 12 coaches.

Florida is the No. 7 seed in the SEC Tournament, which begins on Thu., March 4, when the Gators (14-15) play No. 10-seeded Auburn (14-15) at 2:30 p.m. EST at The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga.
