Monday March 1, 2010Men's Golf Tied for 11th at John Hayt Invitational

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Despite carding one of the lower-scoring rounds among competitors and shaving 17 strokes off their previous round, the UF men’s golf team only moved one spot on the leaderboard to tie for 11th after 36 holes of the John Hayt Invitational. The Gators carded a 293 (+5) on Monday to add to their first-round score of 310 for a two-round total score of 603 (+27).

“Relatively speaking, today was a better day,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “We needed a really good day after our performance yesterday and today just wasn’t that. But it was better obviously. We still have a long way to go to make this a respectable showing for our team. If we get to play tomorrow, the weather does not look promising, we certainly look to get back in there and have a great day. We just made a lot of mistakes on big holes and we won’t beat quality teams when that’s the case. We have a lot to work on and hopefully the weather will allow us to play tomorrow and improve.”

Three of the five Gator golfers improved their score from day one by at least six strokes, one of which was Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.). McKenney shot the low UF score on Monday with a two-under 70. He is currently in a tie for 17th with a 148 (78-70, +4). The senior was even through his first nine holes after making three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. His improvement from the first round to the second was evident. After making a double bogey and three straight bogeys on holes two through five yesterday, McKenney carded four pars on Monday. He finished his round with three-consecutive birdies followed by a bogey on his 18th.

After carding an eight-over 80 on day one, senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) fought back to card the second-lowest UF score on Monday, an even-par 72. He tallied five birdies and five bogeys. Alexander is currently tied for 35th with a 152 (80-72, +8). Junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) improved his score by six strokes in his second round, carding a 74 (+2). Vongvanij got off to a rough start making two bogeys and a double bogey on his third, fourth and fifth holes and entered the turn at two-over. After making a birdie on his 10th hole followed by four-straight pars, Vongvanij closed out his second round with a bogey, two-straight birdies and par. He’s currently tied for 47th with a 154  (80-74, +10).

After being tied for fifth place following the first 18 holes, freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) fell 18 places on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 23th after 36 holes. Choi carded a five-over 77 on Monday for a total score of 149 (72-77, +5).

Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) matched his first round score, carding a 10-over 82 on Monday. Echavarria is currently in 84th place with a 164 (82-82, +20).

Freshman Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) is currently tied for 10th after 36 holes. McCumber, who is competing as an individual, shot a one-under 71 on Monday for a two-round score of 146 (75-71, +2).
