Sunday February 28, 2010M. Golf In 12th After 18 At John Hayt Invitational

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The third-ranked University of Florida men’s golf team is currently in 12th place after the first round of the John Hayt Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club. The squad shot a team score of 310 (+22) on Sunday.

“Obviously today wasn’t a good day for the Gators,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Today wasn’t really anything like how we’ve been playing this season. It was pretty uncharacteristic for this team, who has been solid and consistent up until now. I’m interested to see how we do tomorrow and if we can bounce back and finish with a reasonable showing. I think I’ll find out a lot about the character of this team in the next two days.”

The Gators were led by freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) who is currently tied for fifth place. Choi entered the turn at one-under par after making a bogey on hole two and responding with birdies on holes three and seven. He carded a bogey on 13 and a birdie on 15 before concluding his first round with a bogey on 18. He finished the day with an even-par 72.

Senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) shot a 78 (+6) on Sunday to tie for 51st. McKenney began with a birdie but followed with a double bogey and three-straight bogeys. A birdie on hole eight and a bogey on nine had him at four-over after his first nine holes. McKenney carded three pars before making three-consecutive bogeys on 13, 14 and 15. He closed out his first round with a birdie on 16 followed by two pars.

Senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) is currently tied for 64th with a score of 80 (+8). Alexander carded three birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys before finishing his first round with a triple bogey on 18. Joining Alexander in a tie for 64th with an 80 (+8) is teammate Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.). Vongvanij failed to make a birdie on Sunday, carding six bogeys and a double bogey on hole 11.

Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) rounded out Florida’s lineup with a round-one score of 82 (+10). The redshirt junior is currently in a tie for 76th.

Freshman Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) is currently tied for 18th. McCumber, who is competing as an individual for the second-straight tournament, shot a first-round score of 75 (+3). He entered the turn at one-under after carding a bogey and two-straight birdies on his seventh, eighth and ninth holes. He made a triple bogey on his 11th hole before sandwiching a birdie with two bogeys on his final three holes.
