Monday February 22, 2010W. Golf Leads After 36 Holes at Central District Invitational

Parrish, Fla.

With four of five Gator golfers in the top-10, the University of Florida women’s golf team is currently in first place after 36 holes on Monday at the Central District Invitational. The squad shot a first-round score of 571 (290-281, -5) to secure sole custody of first place, 20 strokes better than second-place TCU.

The Gators at the top of the leaderboard after the first few holes of Monday’s morning round and remained there the entire day, never falling out of first place.

“Obviously it was a really great day to be a Gator,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “I’m really proud of them. The conditions were tough; there was a lot of wind in the afternoon. But they stayed really patient and took care of business around the greens. They obviously made a lot of putts so that’s great. The other cool thing about today was that it truly was a team effort. Everyone contributed and as a coach, that’s great to see.”

Florida was led by Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.), who was also the most improved Gator from the first to second round. Lendl carded a two-over 74 in the morning, making three bogeys and a birdie. She rebounded by scoring the low round in the afternoon with a five-under par 67. She began and ended her second round with birdies and had a stretch where she collected four birdies on six holes. Her 36-hole round score of 141 (-3) is good for sole custody of second place. Lendl is just one stroke behind Arkansas’ Kelli Shean who is atop the individual leaderboard.

“I watched Isabelle for the majority of her first round and thought that if she had only made a few putts here and there it would be a different story,” said Dowling. “Obviously that’s what happened in the afternoon. I’m just really happy for her. She’s worked hard and prepared well and I look forward to seeing what she does tomorrow.”

Just one stroke away from Isabelle is her sister, Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.). The sophomore is tied for third with a two-round score of 142 (-2). Lendl made birdies on her third and 16th holes and bogeys on her fourth and 13th for an even-par 72. She improved her score by two strokes in the afternoon, carding a two-under 70.

Also finishing the day under par was sophomore Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.), who boasts a one-under 143 heading into the final 18 holes. Jensen exchanged four bogeys and four birdies in her first round for a 70 (E). She got off to a rough start on her second 18 holes with a bogey on her first hole but responded with two birdies for a one-under 71. Freshman Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) rounded out the Gators in the top-10, tying for seventh place with a 145 (72-73, +1). She collected seven birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey on the day.

Junior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) is currently tied for 17th place with a 150 (76-74, +6).

The Gators will fight to maintain their lead on Tuesday as they tee off for the third and final round at 8 a.m. ET. Live scoring and official results are available at www.GatorZone.com or www.golfstat.com.
