Sunday February 14, 2010No. 4 M. Golf Wins Seventh-Straight SunTrust Gator Invitational

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida men’s golf team won their seventh-consecutive team title at the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Sunday. The Gators shot a team score of 279 (-1) in the final round at the Mark Bostick Golf Course for a total tournament score of 841 (283-279-279, +1). Florida doubled its nine-stroke lead entering the final round to finish with an 18-stroke advantage. Meanwhile, all five Gators in Florida’s lineup finished in the top-10.

Florida was led by the team’s veterans, senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), senior Tim McKenney (Scottdale, Ariz.) and redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia). The trio all tied for third place with a total score of 212 (+2).

Although the Gator Invitational marks the first tournament win for Florida this season, head coach Buddy Alexander and his team will take away more than just first place honors.

“I’m particularly pleased with the amount of bounce backs there were this weekend,” said Alexander. “I can’t say enough about McKenney. The start he got off to yesterday was just unbelievable and then to bounce back and claim the low round both yesterday and today was great to see. I give him a big tip of the cap. I think that’s probably the biggest thing that happened for us this weekend, in terms of his confidence.”

“Andres shot four over on the front nine and went on to shoot four bogeys so he had a little comeback of his own,” Alexander continued. “Tyson also made a comeback after being three-over early on. Winning is cool and a big margin of victory shows that we’re comfortable on our home course, but coaches like to see a little character and I saw a lot of that this weekend.”

After entering the final round in a tie for the lead, Alexander fell two places on the leaderboard. He was at or near the top of the leaderboard the entire afternoon and entered his final nine holes two-under par. He bogeyed two of his next three holes before making his final bogey on 17 to finish at one-over 71. Joining Alexander in his final Gator Invitational was McKenney, who shot the lowest round of any UF golfer this weekend with a 66 (-4) on Sunday. He made birdies on holes two, seven and eight before carding back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11. McKenney showed his experience and composure on the course by making birdies on three of his final seven holes.

After leading the team following the first round, Echavarria shot the highest team score in the second. He responded Sunday with an even-par 70. He got off to a difficult start, entering the turn at four-over after making bogey, bogey and double bogey on holes three through five. Echavarria had more success on his back nine, making four consecutive birdies on holes ten through 13. He followed a birdie on 17 with a bogey on 18.

Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) and Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) tied for seventh place with a 54-hole score of 214 (+4). Vongvanij matched his first round score in his final round, carding a two-over 72. The junior made a double bogey on his second hole, a bogey on eight and two-consecutive birdies on nine and 10. After making four-consecutive pars at one-over, Vongvanij made two-consecutive bogeys on 15 and 16 before carding his final birdie on hole 17. In his first appearance at the Gator Invitational, Choi shot a 72 (+2) in his final round. He tallied three bogeys and finished on a positive note with a birdie on hole 18.

Two Florida freshmen also made their Gator Invitational debut, competing as individuals. Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) finished in a tie for 31st with a 221 (75-78-68, +11) after carding his best round of the tournament on Sunday. Fellow newcomer Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) finished in a tie for 36th with a 54-hole score of 222 (+12). Senior Robbie Wight (Palm Beach, Fla.)  tied for 42nd with a total score of 223 (75-74-74, +13).

Florida State finished in second place with a total score of 859 (283-291-285, +19), while Chattanooga took home third place with an 869 (282-289-298, +29).

The University of Mississippi’s Jonathan Randolph took home the individual title with a total score of 210 (71-72-67, E). LSU’s Andrew Loupe was just one stroke behind with a 211 (71-71-69, +1) to finish in second.

The Gators will not travel far for their next tournament as the team will tee off in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. for the John Hayt Invitational on Feb. 28-March 2.
