The University of Florida women's golf team kicked off its spring 2010 season on Monday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The Gators are currently in 10th place after shooting a team score of 304 (+20) in the first round at the par-71, 5,912 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
"This golf course is everything you could ever want," said head coach Jan Dowling. "It challenges every facet of the game. Its important for the team to continue to stay patient, which I though we did a good job of today. This course will show every golfer's weaknesses. We just have to be solid, stay patient and make good decisions and I think we'll do well."
The team was led by Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) who is currently in 12th place after carding a two-over 73. The junior is the veteran of the lineup, joining two sophomores and two freshman in Palos Verdes. Two consecutive bogeys on holes 17 and 18 landed her at two-over entering the turn. She added another bogey on her 15th hole but was able to end her first round on a positive note, making a birdie on the par-four ninth hole.
Three Gators are currently tied for 39th place after carding a six-over 77 on Monday. Sophomore Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) was even through her first three holes, before struggling on holes 13 and 14 with a double bogey and bogey, respectively. A birdie on her eighth hole allowed her to enter the turn at two-over. She carded a bogey on her 11th hole, a double bogey on her 13th and a birdie on her 17th. She was four-over par before making a double bogey on her final hole.
Sophomore Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) also finished her first round with a double bogey on her final hole. She finished her first 18 holes at three-over par and collected two consecutive bogeys on her 10th and 11th holes. Her second of two birdies came her 16th hole. Joining Lendl and Jensen in 39th place is Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines). The freshman made two double bogeys, three bogeys and a birdie.
Rounding out Florida's lineup was freshman Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.), who carded an eight-over 79, good for a tie for 55th. Lendl got off to a rough start, making bogeys on three of her first five holes. Her only birdie of the afternoon came on her seventh hole, but was followed with a bogey on her ninth to enter the turn at three-over. She finished eight-over after making a double bogey and three bogeys in her final nine holes.
The Gators will return to action on Tuesday for the second round, teeing off at 11:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring and official results are available at www.GatorZone.com and www.golfstat.com.
