Tuesday February 2, 2010M. Golf Finishes In Fourth At Arizona Invitational

Tucson, Ariz.

The University of Florida men’s golf team finished their first event of the spring season, the Arizona Invitational, in fourth place on Tuesday. The Gators matched their second round score of 279 on Tuesday for a total team score of 839 (281-279-279). The squad finished the tournament 13 strokes under par.

“The one thing I can say about our team is that they are consistent,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Again, they didn’t play very well based on the fact that the course was sitting there waiting for them. There was no wind, the greens were not firm and the scoring conditions were great.”

“If you look at our last four tournaments, we haven’t played poorly, but we haven’t played our best,” said Alexander. “Hopefully we have that to look forward to. Overall, I’m pleased with the consistency, but I’m ready to see something more extraordinary, which is something this team is capable of.”

Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned his first top-10 finish of 2009-10 after carding a season-best 67 (-4) on Tuesday. The senior tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard with a total score of 207 (68-72-67, -6). McKenney made birdies on holes two, five, 12 and 18 in his final round of play.

Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) and senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) both finished the tournament with a total score of 210 (-3) to tie for 16th place. Echavarria saved his best for last, shooting a 68 (-3) on Tuesday, his best score of the tournament. Alexander carded an even-par 71 in his final round, making three birdies and three bogeys.

Bank Vongvanij finished the Arizona Invitational with a 36-hole score of 214 (71-68-75, +1), good for sole custody of 32nd place. Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) was the most improved Gator from the second to third round, improving his score by eight strokes. The freshman shot his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, a two-over 73 for a total score of 231 (77-81-73, +18) to finish in a tie for 66th.

Freshman Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) competed as an individual in Arizona and finished his first collegiate tournament in a tie for 11th with a 209 (69-70-70, -4).

“Tommy finished 11th in his first collegiate tournament which was good,” said Alexander. “Last time we played an individual in the fall, Bank finished in a tie for sixth. So its been good to get the guys some extra experience and when they’ve played as individuals, they’ve played well.”

California claimed the team title by a one-stroke margin with a team total score of 823 (269-274-280, -29), edging out Arizona. However, the Wildcats were able to capture an individual crown as Rich Saferian took home the prize with a 36-hole score of 200 (68-66-66, -13).

Florida will return to action on Feb. 13 and 14 when it hosts the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. The Gators will attempt to take home their 24th team title in program history. Admission is free and live scoring will be available at www.GatorZone.com.
