Monday February 1, 2010Men's Golf Tied for Fifth After Day One of Arizona Invitational
The third-ranked University of Florida men's golf team is currently tied for fifth after playing 36 holes at the Arizona National Golf Club on Monday. The Gators improved their first round score by two strokes after carding an five-under 279 in the afternoon round and a 281 (-3) on their first 18 for a total score of 560 (-8).
"We didn't play particularly well today in that this golf course is really different," said head coach Buddy Alexander. "The wind wasn't blowing so it was a pretty easy day to score but we didn't adjust. I don't think we realized how easy the course was and the team needed to pick up on that as the day went on, but didn't. Consequently, I think that everyone was pretty average today. Overall, we'll need to turn it up a notch or two and hopefully get a good round to finish this tournament up."
After two rounds of play, senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) leads the Gators with a total score of 139 (70-69, -3). He finished both of his rounds on a positive note on Monday, carding birdies on two of his final three holes in the morning round and notching an eagle on the 18th hole in the afternoon. Joining Alexander in a tie for 10th was Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.). The junior improved by three strokes from the first to second rounds. After carding an even-par 71 on his first 18 holes, Vonganij tallied seven birdies in his second round, but also made double bogeys on holes one and 11.
After leading the team after the first 18 holes, senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished the day in a tie for 18th with a 140 (-2). After collecting birdies on three of his first five holes, McKenney carded 13-consecutive pars to finish the first round with a 68 (-3). He continued his momentum into his second 18 holes, shooting an eagle on his first hole. McKenney made a bogey on the sixth hole and birdies on the eighth and ninth to enter the turn at three under. Bogeys on holes ten and 11 and a double bogey on 15 landed him at one-over in his second round.
Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) is currently tied for 30th place with a 141 (-1). Echavarria improved his first round score of a 72 (+1) by three strokes, carding a 69 (-2) in the second round. He finished the day with seven birdies, four bogeys and one double bogey.
Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) rounded out Florida's lineup with a 158 (77-81, +16) to tie for 71st. The freshman was one of four Gators to card an eagle on Monday and the only golfer for Florida to tally two. His first eagle came on the 18th hole in the morning round and hole No. 2 in the afternoon.
Making his collegiate debut and playing the tournament as an individual, Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) finished the day in a tie for 10th with a 139 (69-70, -3). Mou carded one eagle, eight birdies and seven bogeys in 36 holes of play.
California is currently leading the field after carding a 543 (269-274, -25) on Monday. The Gators return to the course on Tuesday morning for the third and final round of the Arizona Invitational. Visit www.GatorZone.com or www.golfstat.com for live scoring and updated results.
