Saturday January 30, 2010Gator Lacrosse Falls to Team U.S.A., 17-8

Orlando, Fla.

The inaugural Florida lacrosse team saw their first game action of the season on Saturday in an exhibition game against the U.S. National Developmental team, dropping a 17-8 decision at the Disney Wide World of Sports in Orlando.

The game started with a high intensity level as each team was whistled for multiple fouls. Team U.S.A. took advantage early and scored a free position goal just under two minutes into the match. Sam Farrell (Millersville, Md.) found Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) open in front of the goal to even the score for UF.

Less than a minute later, Dashiell assisted Colby Rhea (Abington, Md.) to give the Gators a 2-1 advantage. The U.S. team responded with four unanswered goals to lead 5-2 midway through the first half. Rhea scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.), who added an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 6-4.

With 24 seconds left in the opening half, Farrell finished on a pass from Julie Schindel (Edgewater, Md.), but the goal was taken away after a foul was called. The U.S. team scored just seconds later and took a 7-4 lead at the half.

The margin widened early in the second half when the U.S. team scored five straight goals to lead 12-4. The Gators had some hope when Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal and Rhea assisted on a goal by Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.), but Team U.S.A. added five goals to all but decide the match.

Bruns notched her second goal of the game and Caroline Chesterman (South Nyack, N.Y.) capped the scoring with just over a minute left.

Florida will return to action Feb. 14 when the travel to Princeton for their final exhibition of the season. UF opens the regular season against Jacksonville on Feb 20 at 6:00 p.m. The game will be televised live state-wide on Sun Sports.
