Junior Tim Olson’s two-out, bases loaded double in the bottom of the ninth
inning gave Florida an 8-7 victory over San Jose State in the Waco
Regional elimination game. The win advanced Florida to the Regional
Championship game Monday at Noon ET against San Jose State.
Trailing 7-4 entering the ninth inning, Spartan starter Tim Adinolfi
retired the first two batters to pull SJSU within one out of advancing to
NCAA Super Regional action. Sophomore Mark Kiger and Matt Siegel both
singled to extend the game for Kurt Keene. After SJSU brought in left-
hander Chris Key, who earned the win against UF in the regional opener,
Keene lined a single to score Kiger. After a wild pitch advanced the
runners, DH Brian Rose was hit by pitch to load the bases. Spencer
Williams pinch ran for Rose before Olson lined the ball in the gap in left
center. Williams crossed the plate with the winning ran as the ball eluded
catcher Adam Shorsher in a close play.
Olson had a career-high four hits with four RBI including a solo home run
earlier in the game. Keene finished with two hits, surpassing David
Eckstein’s school record for single season hits with his ninth inning
single.
Jay Belflower earned the win in releif, pitching 4.1 innings. He allowed
just one run on four hits.
Florida advanced out of the loser’s bracket to face San Jose State with a
14-0 victory over Southwest Texas State earlier in the day.
Joey Simon picked up his 10th win in the contest, allowing no runs on four
hits over 6.1 innings. K.O. Wiegandt pitched 2.1 shutout innings in
relief.
Florida had a postseason record 20 hits in the game. Eight of Florida’s
nine starters had at least two hits.
