Wednesday October 28, 2009W. Golf Finishes Second at Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown

Las Vegas, Nev.

The Florida women’s golf team shot the lowest team score of the day with a nine-over 297 on Wednesday at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The Gators moved from fourth place after the second round to finish their final tournament of the fall season in second with an 883 (289-297-297, +19). All five Gators participating finished the event in the top-20.

“It felt really good to be in the hunt down the stretch,” said head coach Jan Dowling. “Obviously we didn’t finish where we wanted but we had the lowest round of the day in some really tough conditions. The team should be proud of the way that they played. I think that the performances this week should help to motivate them throughout the winter. They know what it’s like to be in the hunt now and I think that will keep them motivated. Overall, I’m really proud of everyone and I thought it was a great finish.”

The team was led by Isabelle Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) for the second-straight day. Isabelle freshman tied for sixth with a 220 (73-72-75, +4). She was one-over heading into her final three holes before collecting a double bogey, bogey and birdie. Although her final round was her highest of the week, her finish marked the second time she ranked in the top-10 in as many events. The Gators had a golfer finish in the top-10 in each of their three tournaments this fall.

“Isabelle played very consistently all week,” said Dowling. “It was really cool to watch. She stayed calm and poised throughout and that was the key to her success. In conditions like we faced, it’s very easy for someone to get handed a couple bad breaks but she never let that discourage her. She may be disappointed how she finished down the stretch but I think she will look back and be proud of the way she performed. We all certainly are.”

Freshman Amelia Lewis (Jacksonville, Fla.) and junior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) tied for 11th place with a 54-hole score of 222 (+6). Lewis matched her second round score on Wednesday, carding a three-over 75. She was two-under par through her first eight holes and went on to collect an additional two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. Yadloczky shot a two-over 74 in her final round, tallying three birdies and five bogeys.

Sophomore Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) had the best finish of her career, tying for 14th place with a total score of 223 (73-74-76, +7). Just one stroke away was sophomore Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.), whose 224 (75-76-73, +8) tied her for 17th place.

Arizona took home a pair of trophies, as the Wildcats won the team title with a score of 878 (284-294-300, +14) and Sherlyn Popelka earned medalist honors with a 7-under 209 (69-69-71).

The Gators will return to action in the spring of 2010 when they travel to Palos Verdes, Calif. for the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Feb. 8-10.
